Indian shuttler Tharun Mannepalli entered the men’s singles second round of the Swiss Open after Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto retired mid-match.

Mannepalli, ranked 43rd, was leading 16-21, 21-16, 7-2 against the fifth-seeded Nishimoto, who retired due to a shoulder issue.
•
The 24-year-old Mannepalli will next face Malaysia’s Justin Hoh in the second round.
•
In women’s singles, Malvika Bansod lost to Thailand’s world No. 4 Pornpawee Chochuwong 11-21, 15-21.
