Marine Fisheries Census Nears Completion, Preliminary Report Expected by February-End
- •The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) is set to complete the household enumeration for the fully-digitized National Marine Fisheries Census (MFC) 2025 by January-end.
- •A preliminary report is anticipated by February-end, with the final report due in March, led by J Jayashankar, CMFRI principal scientist.
- •Enumeration is almost complete in 12 states and union territories, with West Bengal being the last to finish due to a late start.
- •The census, extended twice due to local polls and other issues, shows approximately 9-10 lakh households, similar to the previous census, but with increased habitations.
- •This is the first fully digitalized census, utilizing geo-tagging and the National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) to register fishers and ensure benefits from schemes like PM-MKSSY.
Why It Matters: The first fully digitized marine fisheries census is nearing completion, promising a comprehensive database for planning.
