Myanmar Hit by 3.8 Magnitude Earthquake; Region Faces Frequent Seismic Activity
•
A 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Saturday, February 21, at a depth of 70km, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
•
This follows several recent seismic events in the region, including a 4.1 magnitude quake on February 18 and a 4.2 magnitude quake on February 17.
•
Another 3.8 magnitude earthquake occurred on February 17 at a shallow depth of 10km, increasing the risk of aftershocks and potential damage.
•
Myanmar is situated between four tectonic plates (Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma), making it highly susceptible to earthquakes and tsunamis.
•
The 1,400-kilometre Sagaing Fault poses a significant seismic hazard to densely populated areas like Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon.
