Parliamentary Panel Urges Expedited Monetisation of Gold-Rich Tailings at Bharat Gold Mines
•A parliamentary committee has pressed the mines ministry to fast-track the monetisation of 33 million tonnes of gold-rich tailings dumps at Bharat Gold Mines Ltd (BGML) in Kolar Gold Fields, Karnataka.
•These tailings dumps, massive storage facilities of crushed rock and processing chemicals, contain recoverable quantities of gold and other precious metals, but also pose environmental risks.
•BGML, a PSU under the mines ministry, has been closed since 2001, with Rs 8.75 crore allocated for its maintenance in the 2026-27 budget.
•The Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel has requested to be updated on the latest developments regarding the monetisation process.
•BGML, incorporated in 1972, ceased operations due to economic unviability; the government is now exploring viable options for its future.
