Sanctioned Russian Tanker Explodes, Sinks Off Libya; All 30 Crew Rescued

A Russian-flagged tanker, Arctic Metagaz, carrying 61,000 tons of liquefied natural gas, exploded and sank off the coast of Libya.
•
The incident occurred on Tuesday, about 240 kilometres off the Libyan city of Sirte, with a massive fire following a sudden explosion.
•
The tanker was under Western sanctions and suspected to be part of Russia’s shadow fleet, attempting to bypass sanctions over the war in Ukraine.
•
All 30 crew members were successfully rescued and transferred to another vessel heading to Benghazi; no casualties were reported.
•
The Arctic Metagaz had sailed from Murmansk, Russia, and was bound for Port Said in Egypt, its last reported position was off Malta.
