Indian Carmakers Lead in 5-Star Safety & Market Share, Outpacing Koreans

  • Mahindra and Tata Motors surpass Hyundai and Kia in both domestic sales volumes and the number of 5-star Bharat NCAP safety-rated models.
  • Mahindra has five models and Tata Motors has ten models with 5-star safety ratings, including both ICE and EV variants.
  • Hyundai currently has no 5-star rated models from Bharat NCAP, while Kia has only one (Syros); Hyundai's Tucson, which had a 5-star rating, is discontinued.
  • Bharat NCAP tests vehicles for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), and safety assist technologies through various crash tests.
  • Indian carmakers collectively increased their domestic passenger vehicle market share to 27.73% in April-December FY26, while Korean firms saw their share decline to 18.73%.
