India's Longest Funicular Railway Opens at Shri Malanggad, Cuts Travel Time Drastically
- •Shri Malanggad, a hill fort near Kalyan in Thane district, Maharashtra, now features India's longest funicular railway, operational since January 18.
- •The funicular system replaces a challenging 2,500-2,600 rock-cut step climb, reducing ascent time to the Haji Malang shrine from two hours to 7-10 minutes.
- •Located near Kalyan, on the outskirts of Mumbai, the fort's shrine dates back to the 7th century and is divided into three levels: Pir Machi, Sone Machi, and the summit.
- •The 1.2 km long railway uses a cable-driven counterbalance system, with two trains each carrying 120 passengers, capable of transporting 1,200 passengers per hour.
- •Operating daily from 8 AM to 8 PM, tickets cost Rs 150 for adults and Rs 75 for children (two-way), with offline purchase only at the lower station.
Why It Matters: India's longest funicular railway at Shri Malanggad drastically cuts travel time, enhancing accessibility for devotees.
