ISRO Begins Work on India's Own Space Station: First Module of BAS by 2028

  • ISRO has initiated groundwork for the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), India's permanent space station in low Earth orbit, aiming to rival the ISS.
  • The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) has invited Indian companies via an Expression of Interest (EoI) to build the first module, BAS-01.
  • The first module, measuring 3.8 meters in diameter and 8 meters tall, is expected to launch by 2028, with a fully functional station by 2035.
  • BAS will serve as a space laboratory for long-duration experiments, microgravity research, and deep-space mission technology development.
  • Indian firms are tasked with complex aerospace manufacturing, requiring extreme precision, specialized techniques, and adherence to human-rated quality standards.

Why It Matters: ISRO has officially begun developing India's own space station, with the first module planned for 2028.
