SEBI Permits Intraday Borrowing for Mutual Funds to Streamline Redemption Payouts

SEBI allows mutual funds to undertake intraday borrowing for investor redemptions, effective April 1, 2026.
•
This formalizes an industry practice, bridging the timing gap between paying investors and receiving maturity proceeds.
•
Borrowing is limited to guaranteed receivables from GoI, RBI, CCIL, and for redemption payments, unit repurchases, and distribution payouts.
•
Asset management companies (AMCs) must bear all costs associated with intraday borrowing and any losses from delayed inflows.
•
New rules for equity index funds/ETFs permit borrowing for stock exchange closing auction sessions, effective August 3, 2026.
