Birbhum's Shitalgram: Low-Cost Paita Production Boosts Local Economy, Empowers Women
•
Shankar Maharaj of Shitalgram, Birbhum, is reviving his village's economy by producing Paitas (sacred threads) essential for Hindu rituals.
•
Paita, also known as Yagnopobit, is a crucial item for Upanayan ceremonies and almost all Pujo rituals in Sanatan Dharma.
•
Shankar Maharaj started making Paitas in 1987, initially mortgaging land, and later expanded the business.
•
The initiative empowers approximately 30 local housewives, who earn 150-300 rupees daily, contributing significantly to their household incomes.
•
Paitas are made from threads sourced from Kolkata, processed with sago and arrowroot flour, and distributed across various parts of West Bengal.
