RBI relaxes dividend rules: Banks can now pay up to 75% profit to investors

RBI has revised dividend distribution rules for all banks, effective from Financial Year 2026-27.

Commercial banks, Small Finance Banks, and Payments Banks can now distribute up to 75% of their net profit as dividends.
•
Local Area Banks and Regional Rural Banks have a higher limit, allowing them to distribute up to 80% of their total profit.
•
The new rules are more flexible than the previous stricter limits, which often capped dividends at 50%, potentially benefiting investors.
•
Banks must ensure capital remains above regulatory requirements even after dividend payments.
