Originally 'Vijayapuri', it was the capital of the Ikshvaku dynasty in the 3rd-4th centuries CE and a global Buddhist and educational hub.

Named after the great Buddhist philosopher Acharya Nagarjuna, it boasted advanced urban planning and architecture.

In the 1960s, the valley was submerged for the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam; a massive rescue operation relocated historical artifacts.

Today, an 'Island Museum' accessible by boat preserves these relics, offering a glimpse into the region's rich past.
