India's Secret Weapon: Underground Caverns Guard Nation's Oil Reserves for Decades

India maintains Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) using advanced Underground Rock Caverns technology for long-term energy security.
•
These underground facilities protect oil from evaporation, fire, aerial attacks, and natural disasters, ensuring safe storage for 10-20 years.
•
Current SPR sites in Visakhapatnam, Mangaluru, and Padur hold 5.33 Million Metric Tons, with 77% currently filled.
•
Combined with commercial stocks, India's total oil reserves can meet approximately 74 days of the country's requirements.
•
India plans to expand its SPR capacity to 11.83 MMT, including new facilities in Chandikhol, to strengthen its energy independence.
