The tombs visible to tourists in the Taj Mahal are symbolic, not the real ones of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal.

Real tombs are located in a closed crypt approximately 30 feet deep beneath the main dome.

They remain closed for security, preservation, and to prevent damage from carbon dioxide emitted by large crowds, as per historian Mayank Dixit.
•
The actual tombs are opened only three days a year during Shah Jahan's Urs for religious rituals like 'Ghusl' and 'Urs'.
•
During the Urs, entry to the Taj Mahal is free, allowing common tourists to view the real tombs.
