Raja Raja Chola's Silk Revolution: How Kanchi Silk Challenged China's Empire
•
Raja Raja Chola I (985 AD) initiated a strategy to make India self-reliant in silk, aiming to counter China's global dominance.
•
He orchestrated the migration of 500 skilled weaver families from Saurashtra, Gujarat, to Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu (990-995 AD).
•
These weavers were provided settlements, land, and resources, leading to the birth of 'Kanchi Pattu' or Kanchi Silk.
•
Kanchi Silk gained royal patronage, was used in Brihadeeswarar Temple, and was exported globally, establishing India's name.
•
This visionary economic move, supported by tax exemptions and raw materials, transformed Kanchipuram into a silk hub, a legacy still seen today.
