New Delhi Station: From Deserted to Daily Hub for 5 Lakh Passengers

  • New Delhi Station, inaugurated in 1956, now handles over 400 trains and 5 lakh passengers daily, a stark contrast to its once deserted past.
  • Old Delhi Station, built in 1864 by the East Indian Railway Company, is Delhi's oldest and busiest railway station, originally known as Delhi Junction.
  • The grand red sandstone building of Old Delhi Station, resembling the Red Fort, was constructed between 1900 and 1903.
  • Initially, New Delhi Station had only one platform and a single-story building in 1926, with few trains, leading to darkness by evening.
  • A track from New Delhi Station to Parliament House via Connaught Place was used to transport stones for construction, accelerating the process.

Why It Matters: New Delhi and Old Delhi Stations transformed from humble beginnings to major railway hubs, reflecting India's growth.
