Meta Executives Warned Encryption Plan Was 'Irresponsible' Amid Child Safety Fears

•Then head of content policy, Monika Bickert, called the plan "irresponsible" and accused Meta of "gross misstatements" about user safety.
•Executives feared end-to-end encryption would severely reduce Meta's ability to detect and report child exploitation to law enforcement.
•Meta estimated a 65% drop in child exploitation reports if Messenger had been encrypted in 2018, from 18.4 million to 6.4 million cases.
