India's Milk Production Soars: 17 MT in 1950 to 247 MT in 2025
•India's milk production increased from 17 million tonnes in 1950 to 247 million tonnes in 2025, as stated by M L Jat, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR.
•The dairy sector contributes 65% of the livestock output and 16% of India’s gross value added (GVA), supporting 46.1% of the population.
•The Union Budget allocated Rs 6,153 crore for animal husbandry, a 16% increase, to recruit veterinarians, subsidize colleges/labs, and provide cooperative tax relief.
•Uttar Pradesh leads in milk production, while Punjab-Haryana excel in yields; NITI Aayog projects 480-606 MT demand by 2047.
•Indigenous buffaloes contribute the highest share (31.18%) to total milk production, followed by crossbred cattle (30.80%).
