HAL Expands Beyond Defense: Debuts SJ100, H-228, Dhruv NG for Civil Aviation Push

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) aims to significantly increase civil aviation's contribution to its revenue, targeting 25% over the next decade from the current 3-6%.
  • At Wings India 2026, HAL unveiled a multi-pronged civil aviation roadmap, focusing on fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and regional jets for the domestic market.
  • HAL showcased the SJ100 regional jet, a 75-100 passenger aircraft developed with Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, intended to address India's regional route needs.
  • The company plans to initially deploy SJ100s through leasing, learn from operations, and then gradually increase manufacturing and localization in India.
  • HAL also highlighted the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter New Generation, nearing civil certification, for offshore energy, tourism, medical evacuation, and emergency services.

Why It Matters: HAL is strategically diversifying into civil aviation with new aircraft and helicopters, aiming for a quarter of its revenue.
