India Secures Pulse Supply: Myanmar Deal Extended for 5 Years, Tur Import Doubles

Central government extends pulse import agreement with Myanmar for five years, until 2030-31, to ensure food security.
•
India to import an additional 1 lakh tonnes of tur dal from Myanmar for FY 2026-27, doubling the agreed quantity.
•
The country consumes 28-29 million tonnes of pulses annually but produces only 24-25 million tonnes, necessitating imports.
•
Anticipated decline in domestic tur and urad production will be offset by increased imports from Myanmar.
•
Under the 2021 agreement, India annually imports 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of urad and 1 lakh tonnes of tur dal from Myanmar.
