Haldia ESI Hospital Built, Unused: Workers Travel 150km for Treatment
•Modern ESI Hospital in Haldia, Purba Medinipur, remains unopened despite construction completion, causing severe hardship for industrial workers.
•Workers currently travel nearly 150 km to Kolkata/Joka ESI Hospital for major medical treatment due to lack of local facilities.
•The 50-bed hospital, with OPD and diagnostic departments, was built on 6 acres of land provided by Haldia Development Authority in 2012.
•Construction, started in 2020 and 90% complete by 2022, included housing for staff, but ESI authorities are unwilling to take charge.
•An inauguration planned for December 2024 did not occur, and ESI authorities have not renewed contracts with local private hospitals, leaving workers with only an OPD.
