1.61 Lakh Water Samples Contaminated in 2025-26, Govt Tells RS

•Over 1.61 lakh water samples out of nearly 64 lakh tested in 2025-26 were found contaminated, the Rajya Sabha was informed.
•Minister of State for Jal Shakti V Somanna provided the data, noting 63.96 lakh samples tested by March 2, 2026.
•The Jal Jeevan Mission – Har Ghar Jal, launched in August 2019, aims to provide potable tap water to rural households.
•Drinking water is a state subject; states/UTs are responsible for schemes, with central government providing technical and financial aid.
•An online JJM-Water Quality Management Information System portal and a 'Citizen Corner' display water quality test results publicly.
