Maharashtra Assembly Doubles Green Tax on Old Vehicles to Combat Air Pollution

Maharashtra Assembly unanimously passed an amendment Bill to increase environmental tax on old and polluting vehicles.
•
The Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026, aims to balance environmental protection, fiscal discipline, and industrial growth.
•
Environmental tax on two-wheelers doubled from ₹2,000 to ₹4,000, petrol vehicles from ₹3,000 to ₹6,000, and diesel vehicles from ₹3,500 to ₹7,000.
•
The new tax regime is expected to generate over ₹160 crore in additional annual revenue for road safety, transport infrastructure, and training.
•
The Bill also caps motor tax on crane vehicles at ₹30 lakh to boost investment and encourages adoption of BS-VI and electric vehicles.
